On Wednesday evening when Morgan and I pulled into the driveway from a long day we spotted a huge package on our front doorstep; her tryke had arrived! It was just in time as her party was scheduled for Saturday. That evening was pretty busy and since the tryke had to be put together, Morgan went to bed without seeing it. After she was asleep David sat down to put it together. That same night Morgan started with a cold. We ended up getting up almost every hour that night with her and having to give her breathing treatments. Well, during one of our late night wake-ups (I think it was about 2am) she spotted the tryke. In the cutest, half asleep little voice she said "Mommy, ride bicycle." It was so cute. Of course, we said "no, you need to go back to sleep," which she thankfully did. That is until 5 am when she woke screaming. She was screaming that her braces hurt and was begging for us to take them off. In a mad rush David and I each took one leg and began rapidly ripping them off her. As soon as they were off she stopped screaming and turned to us to say, "ride bicycle." What a little stinker. We again said no. We told her she needed to take it easy since it was going to be a big day for her; we had her IEP for preschool at 1:00.
Well, finally that afternoon Morgan was allowed to check out her bicycle. Her grandparents were over so they took her out front and let her ride for a bit. She LOVED it; but it didn't last long as it was well into the 90s that day and she still was not feeling that great.
She rode her tryke again for a bit on Friday and then Sunday, but today was the first day she was really feeling well again and was ready to ride. Her therapist recommended that we find a driveway with a slight decline to give her a little momentum to help her learn the motor pattern for riding the tryke. Our driveway is a little too steep; after the initial push she gave it to get going she took off and flew down the driveway. Thankfully a few doors down our neighbors (who no longer live in their house) have a perfect driveway. It has just a slight decline that allows her enough momentum to get past the hard point (where her arm is stretched as far forward as she can reach) but yet still forces her to have to push to get down to the bottom. Below are two videos of her enjoying her new tryke.
We are so grateful to all of you who contributed to Morgan receiving her tryke. She is going to have so much fun riding it all summer!
